Do you struggle with why you should start building your list? Are you still trying to figure out how you should even get started?
Great! Then you can breathe a sigh of relief. Why? Because everyone getting started in business struggles with understanding why they need a list and how it will grow their business.
So the good news is you’re not alone. The list building struggle is real aaannndd I got your back ; )
The even better news is that this blog you’re reading is the first of a 3-part series where I will be walking you through how to build your list, why it’s important and how to convert people in your list to buying customers.
Creating a list and building relationships with the people on that list will add value to your company that will last you the lifetime of your business I’ll explain what this means in a minute. So keep reading…
But for now, I want to put something out that I recently learned from Gary Vaynerchuk when I was listening to his talk from last summer at the All In Conference (<<<do yourself a favor, WATCH THIS!).
Essentially he said the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire is not the width of your relationships, but instead it’s about the depth of your relationships. It’s also about sharing real products that you believe in.
So when we apply this to list building what it means is that it really doesn’t matter how big your list is. The true value in your list is the depth of the relationships with each person that on your list.
Here’s the real point I’m making though. Everyone who has an online presence for their business must have a list.
If you’re not building your list you’re throwing money away! In the sense that you’re throwing away the opportunity to build real relationships with people who are interested in what you have to offer.
Even if you don’t know what you want to say to people yet it doesn’t mean that down the road your list won’t be of value to your business.
Look, I’m going to be straight up with you. It’s better to start from somewhere with a small list then no list, every time. Period.
I know what you’re thinking. You might be active on other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, whatever.
But I’m here to tell you most of the relationships you build on these platforms will not convert as well as your list. When I say convert I mean turning people from online lookers into buyers.
Most likely your email list will always have higher conversions when you’re making an offer. There’s a lot of reasons why that happens and I’m not going to give you all the details in this post.
But if I still don’t have you convinced.
Think about this…
Your website and your email list are the only components of your business that you control. When it comes to Pinterest, Instagram, or Facebook you have zero control over what that platform does.
If they want to change their rules about how you promote your business, you are completely at their mercy.
So if I have you convinced now to start and build your list. Here’s what to do next. Go open a free account with Mail Chimp, or some other platform like Mad Mimi, Convert Kit or Constant Contact.
The power of the list, is that you can make one to many offers. So, instead of only being able to contact one person at a time with a platform like Gmail you’ll be able to reach a much larger audience.
Once you start building your list. You can begin making offers to hundreds of people at once instead of a single person at one time.
The other really important piece of having a list is that you own the emails on your list. Your list will never disappear because it’s not owned by the social media platform that you’re using.
Those people on your list will never go away, but Facebook not only doesn’t give you a list of emails to keep. But it also could close your group that you may have started for your business. It could lock down or delete your Facebook business page, shut down your ads, it’s really up to them and it’s happened to business owners.
Facebook doing stuff like this is more the exception than the rule, but clearly it’s something to keep in mind. Think of your list as diversifying your options.
I know list building can be a little intimidating at times, and I know that once you get used to it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner.
It also helps that generally speaking, your list is the number one tool that when used correctly will be your main lead source for turning online lookers into buyers.
